“Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust”
Immaculee Ilibagiza was on 60 Minutes tonight and was asked how she would react if she met her family's killers. She said she has forgiven them and one killer was a neighbor or friend of the family. But what if you really met him, the question repeated. How would you feel after? Immaculee said she knows she wouldn't feel better if she showed anger. She feels better with the feeling of forgiveness in her heart.
I met Immaculee Ilibagiza at Omega Institute's Being Fearless Conference in March, 2006. Her chilling personal account of the Rwanda genocide moved me to tears. After her talk, standing in the hallway of the hotel, people were lined up in such large numbers that I overheard Wayne Dyer say with a smile, "look at this, Immaculee has a huge line of people for her book signing and I have no one". It was said in a very kind way as Wayne is the one who introduced Immaculee to the world.
Who is Immaculee Ilibagiza and why are so many people crowding around her everywhere she goes. Rwanda's genocide is one of history's most horrific events. In 1994, nearly one million Rwandans were slaughtered over the course of 91 days. Immaculee Ilibagiza spent this time in hiding, fearful of her own life.
I knew I couldn't ask God to love me if I wasn't willing to forgive his children. But what if they were trying to kill me? Immaculee Ilibagiza
Rwanda can be a paradise again, but it will take the love of the entire world to heal my homeland.
